Zhang Yiming, founder of ByteDance, has become Asia’s richest person for the first time, displacing Indian magnate Gautam Adani from the top spot, according to the Bloomberg billionaire rankings announced on September 17, 2026.
The 43-year-old entrepreneur’s net worth is estimated at approximately $105.5 billion—eight times more than what he had at the beginning of 2019, when Bloomberg began tracking his wealth evolution. This extraordinary growth reflects the explosive expansion of his companies in Asia’s technology sector.
Zhang already held the title of China’s richest person thanks to the success of TikTok, the popular short video platform, and its Chinese equivalent Douyin. However, ByteDance’s aggressive investment in artificial intelligence through applications like the Doubao AI chatbot and the Seedance video generator has further boosted his fortune.
Bloomberg considers Zhang’s rise to the top a clear example of the artificial intelligence boom, as he has surpassed billionaires whose fortunes come from more traditional industries, such as infrastructure and logistics in Gautam Adani’s case, energy and retail trade from Mukesh Ambani, or the textile business of Japanese Tadashi Yanai.
This shift in Asia’s wealth rankings highlights a broader transformation in the global economy, where technology and artificial intelligence are creating new billionaires at an unprecedented pace. The success of platforms like TikTok demonstrates how digital business models can generate fortunes faster than traditional industrial empires that took decades to build.
